American Exceptionalism

The term American Exceptionalism has many definitions to many different people. In general it refers to the idea that the United States of America holds the special title of worldwide peace keeper and bringer of justice and democracy as they are the land of the free. American Conservatives; such as the Tea Party, also pair the phrase up with the idea of superiority; whereas liberals would much more prefer Americans to see their country as ‘ordinary’ and so dislike the term. To them ordinary means things like American does not always assume its place as the world’s super power but simple acts as an international negotiator in times of need. The terminology was coined in 1831 by Alexis de Tocqueville as to explain a positive outward effect of America’s democracy. In 1929 the phrase was used adversely by the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, when opposing the idea of the growth of capitalism in the states. In theory, American Exceptionalism works because of four key principles: divine right, resources, just beliefs and diversity. Many believe that the United States was chosen by God to lead the world and so they have the divine power to act in such a way over other countries. Although, others feel that the sheer wealth and resources the country has- such as the most powerful armed forces in the world gives them this power. Some consider the strong ideas and principles that the country was founded on as to the reason they have a greater say; whereas others argue that it is the mix of heritage and cultures, which makes America a kind of highbred of the best of the world, allowing for it to have this exceptional place in the world today. An odd and contradicting feature of the concept is that as an America knows best; they may over power their own legal system, other countries and conduct various types of secret activities if to protect the democratic system and state interests. America knows best: we must invade Iraq to free the people there from the dictatorship they live in, and then as a secondary thought because, they may have weapons of mass destruction (and oil that could be a lot of use to us). The idea that hacking people’s internet history and phone calls is just and fine, because the government can act beyond its means, as in the end they are protecting people from themselves- since they know best! The idea of Exceptionalism has allowed America to involve itself in many conflicts since the Mexican- American War of1846; where the Americans refused to accept that Mexico did not want to be a part of the United States and felt it was their mission to spread ‘freedom’ to the people of Mexico, right through to the Iraq war. During the Cold War the power of American Exceptionalism was used to display the American way of life as the right way and to try and crush the rising power of Communism. Ronald Reagan famously said that America had a duty to be â€Å"shining city on the hill† that the rest of the world would look up to. There are many positives and yet, many negatives of American Exceptionalism, and it is the principles of the term itself have brought about its demise. The waters have been muddied and so there are now many variations of the meaning of the words, which depend on the people using them. There is a spectrum of opinion: to some America is the almighty bringer of justice, and may do this by any means as long as they reach their end target of a freer and fair world. By contrast, others feel that Exceptionalism is simply used as a cover for the falling giant to do whatever it wants; from the invasions of lesser off countries, to spying on the day to day lives of millions of Americans. The use of Exceptionalism in foreign policy is often questioned; is it just a front the country can hide behind when actually working for personal gains rather than the good of the people? The expression is often used today in questioning America’s place as a super power. At a press conference in 2009 Obama was asked about his belief in American Exceptionalism he said: â€Å"I believe in American Exceptionalism, just as I suspect the Brits believe in British Exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek Exceptionalism†. In 2013 Mitt Romney used this comment to attack Obama, stating that he did not believe in the power of the United States as a power, yet them comment had little power as the term has been lost somewhat. The majority of the countries have democracy, or have made a greater step towards it over the last century, leaving America with a much lesser role as the bringer of social equality. American Exceptionalism has shaped the world we live today, without it both America and Britain would not be looked to as a role model of strong democratic systems and equality. The idea has brought the same concepts to many other countries and helped to advance areas such as industry and the role of women. However, in recent years the power of American Exceptionalism has faded and the flaws have become more visible. The positive effects of American Exceptionalism are now much gentler, and the goal is more to help countries create justice, rather than impose America’s view. Role of British Rule in Rise of Communalism in India

The Indian society has never been homogeneous in nature. It has always been a diversified, multicultural, and multireligious society. But through out its history the Indian masses what ever their religion, cast and race was lived without any hostility and enmity. Communalism emerged only during the British rule, so one can very easily assume Communalism as modern phenomenon not an ancient or a medieval one. Communalism emerged during the British rule due to the three main reasons. The divide and rule policies of the British. The emerging competitiveness in the political and social structure of the society and also the conservativeness of the society of that time which slowed economic growth. The war of independence of 1857 in which the Muslims and the Hindus fought side by side against the foreign intruders compelled the British to devise a plan to widen the communal difference between the the Indian masses. The British intimated the Hindus because they find them less hostile than the Muslims which were the former rulers of the subcontinent. This widened the gap between the communities and the Muslims felt cornered. This was the basic reason why the Muslim elite considered to found a separate country for their fellow Muslims. (Sociology of Communalism) Was Partition Inevitable? The Indian Muslims and Hindus have been living side by side for centuries. Despite their cultural and religious differences both the communities have prevailed side by side without any notable hostility between them. The rise of Communalism in the late 19th Century further accelerated by the British rulers and lack of generosity shown by the Indian nationalists made the Muslim population feel vulnerable. This feeling of vulnerability further led to the demand of separate state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah the strongest voice in the favor of the partition was himself a leader of Indian National Congress. But the Congress leadership failed to guarantee the Muslims their representation in the post-ind ependence political and social system. This compelled the Muslim leadership to seek for alternatives i.e. partition. Thus one can conclude that partition was not inevitable if the Muslims have given sound guarantees regarding their social, political and economical future. Nelson Mandela Essay

â€Å"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall,† is a quote by Nelson Mandela, which represents what is needed in order to enjoy success in capturing or living a dream, a hope or a goal. What the quote means, is that in order for one to receive satisfaction, one must be able to overcome failure to achieve success instead of never failing. People don’t ever look at failing as a positive. Instead, they always looked at it as a negative. In reality, people who have never failed will never learn the importance rising after we fall. This quote from Nelson Mandela makes real good sense. If it wasn’t for that type of thinking South Africa will not be where it’s at today. It was his strive to overcome prison and all types of adversity, that South Africa is what it is today. Being able to climb back up and succeed after failure is the only way of really achieving success in capturing a dream, a hope or a goal. By following the quote, Nelson Mandela was able to be the first colored president of South Africa and changed the way politics were handled. If he would have given up after he was thrown in prison, he wouldn’t have gotten South African to where it is today. It was his strive to get back up on his feet and fight for what he believed in that got him to where he was. If he was not able to rise after he fell, where would South Africa be right now? No one person can succeed by staying on the top or no one person can succeed by staying on the bottom. There is a saying that best describes this, which is â€Å"what goes up must come down.† Typically when people come down it’s hard for them to ever go back up. With Nelson’s quote, to truly enjoy success for a dream, a hope or goal, one has to be able to get back on their feet after they have failed. Without failure, there will be no success.

Discussion 700 - Assignment Example This assumption is underpinned by the fact that there is a point of intersection between patients’ seeking clinical care because of their problems and nurses availing themselves in willingness to offer the care. The theory assumes that therapeutic interaction cause patients and nurses to mature. This is because both of them end up learning something new from the encounter. Thirdly, the theory assumes that interviewing skills and communication skills will remain essential to nursing. Through these skills, nurses gather information about the issues of the patient in order to decide accurately about the most appropriate care. The last assumption is that self-understanding is important for nurses to facilitate patient growth and not limit the patient’s choices (Meleis, 2007). Man is an important concept to this theory and it perceives man as an organism that seeks ways of reducing the tensions drawing from their felt needs. According to this theory, health denotes a concept that shows progress of human processes towards community, productive and constructive living ((Basavanthappa, 2007)). Peplau perceived society or environment as containing mores and culture that are important to treatment. Nursing entails a relationship between persons in need of health services and health workers trained to recognize and address these needs. The theory is clear that a therapeutic alliance is imperative for a nursing process to succeed. It has remained consistent through time (Peterson & Bredow, 2009). Finally, the theory holds that the nursing process happens in stages. These stages are orientation, identification, exploitation, and

I will tell you later - Essay Example America demanded for a response after endorsing presence of authoritarian governments with the purpose of assuring stability. However, there was change in the 1970’s and 1980’s as famous movements that were demanding change became very frequent2. As these movements acquire much momentum, the United States was unable to ascertain political and economical stability, which was very necessary by then. In addition, in 1980, the foreign policy used by the US was amended to a democracy promotion. The global economy continued gaining more relevance, and it was during this moment that a new elite sprout on Capitalist strength3. This was in 1980 prior to the finish of Cold war. This was very significant because America it illustrates that America majored in globalization of political and economic features prior to the end of the bi-polar hegemonic system. On the other hand, Sen argues that Globalization does not entirely reflect westernization. According to Sen, globalization is neither new, nor westernized; however, the benefits are justifiable4. Therefore, these two authors points out that we should look at the perspectives of globalization in the sense that, it is something that has been existing and it is not about transformation5 . Based on the readings, Globalization involves sharing goods and services or rather continuity of goods, concepts and authority among many nations, which leads to dependence and interconnection. In this case, globalization becomes a positive factor for change. This is because of improved technology; also, the entire world in under control and it is also empowered through global transactions. I tend to believe that globalization becomes a negative aspect because, firstly, the diffusion of both the traditions and cultures. These factors are fading day in day out. However, this is a temporal way because

Trade Theories assignment How Trade Shaped the World

Trade Theories How Trade Shaped the World - Assignment Example The policies that government made to protect business came in many forms and in varying degrees. State could use their power to finance new business, permit or disable monopolies, impose tariffs, prohibit a wide range of contraband, control labour, and if necessary blockade competing nation. The Europeans, the Asians and the Arabs all recognized the importance of shipping as a means to promote and protect export, though none took it as such an extreme as the European powers. On export power, the mercantilist policies were based on the notion that if a nation could expand its imports of gold by exporting goods, it would thereby deprive its rival nation of gold needed to protect a nation commerce, gold simply bought more protection. The argument persisted in Europe into 18th century until the convincing argument of Adam Smith and David Ricardo demonstrated the values of specialization and comparative economic advantage. A number of factors led to the decline and end of the great period of mercantilism. By 1860, England had dismantled its mercantilist legal structure and risen to power as the undisputed ruler of both the newly industrialized world and its seas. In the modern age, the mercantilist spirit has re-emerged in the form of numerous non-tariff barriers that the free market nation employ to protect very specific industries. The export/import licensing, quarantines, and trading blocs are now manifesting as mercantile protectionism. In many of the closed and semi closed economies of the world e.g. Cuba and China protection of domestic producers is still very strong (Bernstein, 2012) Free trade principles were broadly appealing in an export-driven colonial economy long before publication of Adams Smiths Wealth of Nation revolutionary patriot who mobilized against British imperial trade regulation. Dismantling colonial monopoly would

One story focused on Pope John Paul’s ability to spark â€Å"a revolution of the spirit that liberated Poland, brought down the Berlin Wall, reunited Europe, and transformed the face of the world† (Albright 4). Bob Seiple, the first American ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, shared the story about Mary’s remarkable survival to overcome hate and forgive a militiaman who shot her, paralyzed her and left her to die. The third story centered on the struggles of young children in a camp in Gulu who remained steadfast in faith amidst adversities from members of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The crucial lessons imparted were summed, to wit: â€Å"(1) that there are people who are willing to die—and kill—for their faith; and (2) that religion at its best teaches forgiveness and reconciliation, not only when those acts are relatively easy but also when they are almost unbelievably difficult† (Albright 5). In this regard, the essay hereby aims to explore the extent in which religion plays a crucial factor in influencing diplomatic policies and in determining how the current stance in separating religion and politics have affected resolving political conflicts Albright, Madeleine. See attachment - Movie Review Example We are led slowly into the past. For an American audience, this is especially useful, as Sophie’s story is a trans-Atlantic one that takes place in both Europe and America. This deeply personal focus is another way in which this film differs from other miniseries. Part of the success of this focus comes from Meryl Streep’s performance. The film is virtually unimaginable without her presence. She manages to bring to life the central heroine. This deeply personal story of a woman and her choice sets this film apart from other miniseries. One of the most striking aspects of the cinematography focusing on the Holocaust is that it is in black and white. The colour is sapped from this world. Sophie, whose lips are usually red, has virtually no colour in her face in these scenes. She is living in a nightmare of death and despair, from which there is no real exit. The filmmakers are very careful to create this sense of claustrophobia, and it is very effective. Rather than show huge acts of violence, the filmmakers are content to let much of this happen off screen. The filmmakers also film a lot of scenes indoors, with Stingo, Nathan, and Sophie all very close together. This indicates how trapped each of them is in the worlds they have created for themselves. It is a curious and effective trick. Each of the choices that the characters make—when to act and how to act—have limited their lives in some way. The filmmakers communicate this by filming scenes indoors and in small rooms. There is also a theatrical element to the acting—especially Kevin Kline’s performance as Nathan. It is almost as if he is always on stage. This is an interesting choice in direction as it suggests that Nathan is a man who has dramatized himself. Perhaps he only wants to be with Sophie because of the sense of drama that she offers to him. Like

Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV Infection Essay

Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV Infection - Essay Example This method of prevention involves education about HIV in the society, safe-sex practices, avoiding sharing of contaminated needles for intravenous drugs. Proper moral behavior is necessary to follow these norms (Kapoor, p.248). 3. Prevention of transmission of HIV infection from infected mothers to their babies by anti-retroviral therapy. This therapy is instituted both to the pregnant mother and also to the baby after delivery. Transmission of infection is also prevented by avoiding breast feeding (Kapoor, p.248). All pregnant women attending antenatal clinics during pregnancy should be counseled about HIV infection. They should be educated about the disease and the modes of transmission. The women should be encouraged to take up HIV test voluntarily. They should be informed about the importance and implications of the test and also the course of management if found positive. Women with high-risk behavior should be advised about window period and repetition of the test after 3-6 months if the HIV test is negative (Kapoor, p.248). Any woman who is found to be HIV positive should be taken into confidentiality and counseled appropriately. She should be motivated, be taught 'positive thinking' and informed that 'HIV is not AIDS'. She should also be warned against transmission of the disease to others and how to prevent it by following simple steps like using condoms. The option of termination or continuation of pregnancy should be left to her, but she must be advised about antiretroviral therapy for the baby if she decides to continue the pregnancy (Kapoor, p.248). Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ARV) Administration of ARV to the HIV positive pregnant mother decreases the risk of MTCT by reducing the viral load in the mother and also by preventing fixing of the virus in the baby (Kapoor, p.248). Monotherapy with zidovudine causes only suboptimal suppression. Hence it is recommended to use optimal combination of anti-retroviral drugs as is used in non-pregnant women (Chen, p.1616). The treatment currently used in the treatment of adults with HIV infection is 'highly active antiretroviral therapy' (HAART) (Chen, p.1616). It consists of a protease inhibitor or a nonnucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) such as efavirenz and two nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). However, this treatment should be instituted only after 10-12 weeks of gestation to prevent teratogenic effects. All infants born to HIV positive mothers and having received ARV should be followed up long-term irrespective of their HIV status (Chen, p.1616). Nevirapine (NVP) for Prevention of MTCT NVP is a NNRTI. It directly binds to the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA and thus inhibits the viral replication. After a single dose of 200 mg to the mother, it crosses the placenta efficiently. Added to this advantage, it has a long half-life of 40 hours (Kapoor, p.249). In neonates and infants, the dose is 2mg/kg (Kapoor, p.249). The advantage of NVP therapy is that the administration is a simple two-dose regimen to be taken by mouth. Also, it is inexpensive, easier to maintain confidentiality, does not

Improving telecommunications networks are a positive development for Essay

Improving telecommunications networks are a positive development for human impact on the environment - Essay Example Telecommunication act as a tool for sustainable development of the environment. The conduct of communication on various platforms such as visual or electronic form acts as alternatives to physical transport. Transport in the modern days has resulted to challenges of urban congestion and traffic, in both developing and developed countries. Telecommunication enables the sustainable reduction in unnecessary transports through telecommuting and on-line trading (Sioshansi, 2011, p. 14). Development of the telecommunication infrastructure has enabled the reduction of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This action has reduced the atmospheric pollution that supplements the reduction of respiratory problems among people, as well as the protection of the ozone layer. Telecommunications has impacted positively the environmental field by enabling successive implementation of environmental programs. Improved access to information about agriculture has enabled the sustainable production of agricultural products. Improving telecommunication systems in the rural areas discourage people from migrating to congested towns. Through retaining workforce in the rural areas, the development of the rural economy is accelerated thereby improving living standards of the rural people. An integrated rural development enables development of infrastructure and other public services and foreign investment (Sioshansi, 2011, p. 21). Satellite images have also enabled the uncovering of digital terrain models used to evaluate catchment areas that are possible sites for putting up retention

Literacy - Essay Example Through learning of vowels a kid is able to learn the different sounds and later how to make a syllable. Syllables are the basic units of words which are further joined with helping words to make a meaningful word or a sentence. Every literate person learned how to write or read through some formal or informal education. Informal institutions like the kindergartens and baby cares play a big part in the society regarding this matter (Holbek 7). At this period am proud to say my parents played a major role in what I am today. In class I never understood how to pronounce some vowels, finish my homework and majorly how to write my name. The latter, on many occasions made me skip writing my name on writing books or the quizzes we were frequently given. Pronunciation was a big burden in my kindergarten life, especially words that had two or three syllables (Kozol 194). Each day after school, my parents used to teach me these problems countless times before I slept, which was kind of a torture for me at some point. At times when I was stubborn, I was occasionally punished through spanking and some grounding. Through the frequent teachings and memorizations, I learned how to write my name and even learned some pronunciations beyond my level. Pronunciations and writing of my name is one practice that I believe would never end any time soon, because I still use them up to now (Kozol 199). Apart from the basic learning of writing and pronunciations, the kids are also given time to play.

Picture of the Agar Plate After 3 Days Questions Exercise 1: Microscopic Anatomy of Lymphatic Structures A. How are lymph, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes related? Lymph, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes are all part of the lymphatic system. Lymph vessels carry lymph throughout the body. Throughout the vessles are lymph nodes which fight infection. B. What are the two major functions of the lymph nodes? They clean and filter lymph before it goes back to the blood. They produce antibodies and lymphocytes. C. What are the two functions of the spleen? It protects the body and helps to produce and store blood cells. D. What is the function of the tonsils? They protect the body from harmful germs. E. What are the structural similarities found in lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils? They all have a capsule and are rounded organs with an internal parenchyma of lymphoid cells. Exercise 2: Immunity and the Immune Response A. Explain what is meant by â€Å"memory† as a characteristic of the immune response. When the body comes in contact with a harmful antigen, it has a primary response, which remembers the antigen by creating memory cells. By the secondary response, the memory cells will counteract the antigen. B. How does our immune response distinguish between our own cells and foreign invaders? A major histocompatibility complex is at the surface of each cell in our body. It is what recognizes if something is foreign or not, and lets the immune system know. B. What are lymphocytes and where are they produced? Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that protect the body from infection. They are produced in the bone marrow. C. Distinguish between an antigen and an antibody. An antigen is a foreign material that enters the body, and an antibody is what recognizes the foreign material and helps fight it.

Supporting Individuals in Childcare Education

Supporting Individuals in Childcare Education Exceptionalities are neither positive nor negative; rather, they are differences (Darragh, 2010, p. 114). In your own words, explain the term exceptionalities. Then, using one exceptionality outlined in the text on pages 116-127 of the course text, identify developmental challenges the exceptionality may present for the child, and appropriate adaptations, accommodations, or modifications that may need to be considered in order to support the individual childs development and learning. The term exceptionalities have a defining characteristic that is different from the norm for physical and mental abilities. It describes children or people that go beyond what is normal or what society expects. The child can have extra unusual abilities. It can also include children that have disabilities that prevent the child from functioning well in certain areas of development. The same goes for a child with different emotional or health development. It is a difference in development of these different disabilities such as syndromes, impairments, and certain disorders. (Darragh, 2010). In that respect are different classes such as intellectual disability, hearing, oral communication and speech communication, visual, orthopedic, autism, multiple impairments, traumatic injuries to the brain ad giftedness and talent. These are most commonly seen in the classroom. Children that are exceptional have many challenges in front of them. A gifted child can have learning and attention probl ems. There are number of these children that go through school without being diagnosed ad to having special talents or needs. These can also have problems in social emotional such as frustration this is common in a child that has not been diagnosed and their talents and learning have not gone unnoticed or partly addressed. They have a high aspiration and dont like the low expectations that someone may have for them. They want independence and struggle with knowing that they need help with learning and attention issues. They may be trying to be perfect. Low self -esteem is another challenge for a gifted child because if they dont have the support needed they can lose confidence in their abilities or they just quit because they believe they start to think that failure is unavoidable. This thinking can cause depression for the child. Social isolation is another They can feel like they dont fit in into the world or another. They may lack the social skills to be comfortable with other ch ildren in their gifted class. They may have problems relating to children in their regular class. This can cause a child to think, Where do I belong?. They often find it easier to relate to an adult than children that are their age. The truth is a child that is labeled exceptional may be a challenging enough. There are other challenges that they face such as language and communication problems, learning and being involved in daily tasks like playing games and interaction with children. Children can experience challenges in attentiveness and being able to manage their impulses. To accommodate a child that is exceptionalities the parents and the teacher need to recognize the gift or the disability that the children has. Talk to the school if you suspect a child is gifted. Request a meeting with special services coordinator. Tell them your concerns. An example is if a parent or teacher is taking care of a child with autism. You need to make sure you maintain your daily routines because routines for this child is very important. Stay in the gifted program if the child was identified as gifted but not doing well in the program. The child should be assessed for learning and attention problems before you make decisions about removing the child from the program. The childs environment can be fixed by the childs sensitivity by making sure to have books, toys, and appropriate music for the child. You can have a mentor for that child to help the child improve or build on thei r abilities and make a difference in the childs development. Making most of your childs IEP by addressing the childs weakness and to nurture their gifts. To make goals that are long term and short term. Make sure you brainstorm and be persistent. Empower the child by helping the child comprehend what their gifts are and their weaknesses are Let them know that you are there for the child in his struggles in areas. If they are frustrated give them time to figure it out and dont go straight in to help the child. Let them cope with their mixed abilities. Parents that partner with teachers can help that child develop their talents can reach their full potential. Teachers can use charts and pictures in lessons to help in the strengths of the child. Some adaptions can be changes in class work or routines because of the type of disability. Modifications can be done to like the things the child is taught, and the way the child works at school. Accommodations are such as a tape recorder and b ooks on audio. Modifications are changing the curriculum or instruction. When these are made children with disabilities is not expected to master things like others. Supporting the development and learning of each and every child requires specific knowledge of each childs strengths and challenges as well as knowledge of development, exceptionalities, and effective practice. Explain how evidence-based practice synthesizes knowledge of individual children and effective practice. Then, identify how you plan to use this process in your work with young children. The way we take care of children effectively rests in what we know of the childs exceptionalities and the evidence that we use for beneficial activities with them. Knowing the characteristics of the exception and the disabilities makes it easier to care of that child. Applying the knowledge and information that parent and teachers have in the past can be put to the present situation. Evidence-based practice can elevate a family making mistakes by following a process they studied and their values. (Darragh, 2010). This process is encouraging because it shows teachers and the parent they are not by themselves. This helps parents and families to share what their experiences are and when they do this the get extra knowledge and can save time. When I work with exceptional children, I intend on using evidence-based knowledge to see past and to see what the effective method will be for that child. These methods will help in focusing on the childs special issues that they may have. Being spe cialized in this this will help the child to grow and become improved. I will make sure before I deal with these children that I comprehend their needs, and I will research cases and will make sure I stay updated often so that I will be up to date with any new issues. I will research and find out what I need to watch out for in the childs development. I will also use the five-step evidence based decision making. I will ask the question, What my childs main needs are? Look or the best evidence such as what research and practices can give me advise on how to meet the childs main needs. Seeing the quality of the evidence is seeing that the research of the current knowledge is current for the field, and if they will benefit the child. Putting together the research with values and wisdom which is applying what you have learned that respects the child and the family in their way of supporting their child in their development and learning. I will evaluate all the steps such as the childs s trengths and challenges. (Darragh, 2010). I will help the children to make good decisions with their goals that will benefit the child. Understanding the childs unique needs and their cultural and linguistic diversity. The way we can support a child is having the knowledge and skills to understand the diverse needs of the children and their families. We should offer a welcoming, nurturing, and a classroom with respect. Effective assessment is an essential component used to lend insight into young childrens strengths and challenges. However, assessment data, particularly for young children, can be difficult to obtain. Based on pages 245-247 of the course text, explain how play-based, strength-based, and culturally and linguistically sensitive assessment address challenges associated with effective assessment for young children. Play-based assessment is a tool that shows how a childs development in interactions with the environment. (Darragh, 2010). Play opens windows to the childs strengths and the way they cope with things. It is not just social/emotional, cognitive or motor skills. Play gives important documentation on the qualities of the childs relationships. (Darragh, 2010). This is successful with the infant-toddler children. Watching children play teachers can see how a child relates to other children because children are more likely to behave normally when they play. This method is a remedy for challenges that are associated with assessments. The strength-based assessment is criticized this assessment has been great on providing information on a childs abilities. (Darragh, 2010). This information can be checked with the expectations of a normal child. This type of assessment strength is it focuses on what children can do instead of what they cannot. Culturally and linguistically is a sensitive, resp ectful and responds to the childs learning needs assessment. This is the best because it focuses on both the cultural and the linguistic aspects. At the beginning assessments were done in English and now they have Spanish language ones. When in English this made, it challenging because of a small number of assessment tools. The assessments have addressed the issues by getting appropriate tools for assessment which they are free from cultural and linguistic bias. It also takes account for the cultural information that the child accepts. The observation of the children is getting to know the child and the interaction they have with their environment and by listening and watching them it helps in your ability to make decisions on teaching and learning.

Page 78 6. Outline risk factors in relation to health, to include stress/ lifestyle/ diet/ illness. Page 910 ReferencesPage 11 1. EXPLORE THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATIONS TRAINING IN THE PROMOTION PROVISION OF HEALTH SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE. The role of communications and training in the work place is important in any job. In Healthcare there is no exception to this. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (SHWWA 2005) all employers must specify the training essential to ensuring the health and safety of their employees. The training provided will help staff achieve the essential skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to ensure that they are competent in the health and safety features of their work. In healthcare the Conformity European (CE) mark is important and a lot of employers train their staff to look out for this. Communication in the workplace is essential as is training and the Health Service Executive (HSE), Health Service Authority (HSA) and Health Information Quality Authority (HIQA) are there to ensure that the SHWWA 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007 (GAR 2007) are in place in the workplace. It is important from management to staff that communication is enforced in the workplace for health safety. For instance if there was a spillage in a nursing home in the corridor and there was a sign put in place to warn others of this the management could rest in ease knowing that their staff are aware and capable of ensuring health safety practices in the workplace. That is just one way of communicating there are many more ways I have listed a few below. (Course Notes 2015) Verbal – speaking, face to face Listening Non Verbal – texting, email, notice board, fax, registered mail, skype Demo/Training Focus group Conference call Emergency procedures www.google.com /images 2. OUTLINE THE PRINCIPLES PROCEDURES OF GOOD HOUSE-KEEPING IN THE WORKPLACE. The importance of good house-keeping is so important Healthcare and in particular Nursing Homes and Hospitals which are all about health and the well-being of patients. If a workplace practises bad house-keeping it can become unsafe and even hazardous for the staff and patients. Cluttered and untidy areas, spills and leaks and broken and damaged equipment are all signs of poor house- keeping. An example of bad house-keeping could be a fire exit left blocked and a fire breaking out in the work place, this bad house-keeping endangers everybody in the work place and it is up to the employers and employees to avoid incidents like this. Work places need to outline the principles procedures of good house-keeping to all employers and employees. The workplace needs to be actively monitoring the process of house-keeping within the workplace. HIQA and HSA have certain standards on house-keeping and have an inspection system in place. Some benefits of good house-keeping are: Good housekeeping prevents accidents such as slips, trips and falls Make the workplace happy, enjoyable and safe Improve and maintain your company’s image (good housekeeping echoes a well-run company) order and routine will impress visitors, employees and clients etc. Reduce the risk of accidents or harmful materials i.e. dust, vapours Help your company make the most and benefit the best out of its work space. In house-keeping there are 5S, this is a method of work organised in 5 stages with the goal of considerably improving the order and cleanliness in the workplace. This is known as the Heidelberg Model. These 5S are: SORT- removing anything unnecessary and disposing of it properly STRAIGHT- set things in order, easy to find SHINE- keep work place clean and safe STANDARD- maintain high standards in house-keeping and maintain orderliness SUSTAIN- to keep in working order, to perform regular audits (www.hsa.ie) 3. NOISE, DUST AND FUMES ARE HAZARDS WHICH ARE COMMONLY FOUND IN WORKPLACES. FOR ONE OF THESE HAZARDS OUTLINE THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO THIS HAZARD AND CONTROL MEASURES WHICH MIGHT BE USED IN THE WORKPLACE. IDENTIFY AT LEAST 3 HAZARDS WHICH ARE COMMONLY ENCOUNTERED IN YOUR WORKPLACE AND BRIEFLY DESCRIBE HOW THESE ARE CONTROLLED. A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause you or others harm. In the workplace there are many hazards. There are 5 categories of hazards Physical, Mechanical, Biological, Chemical and physosocial. (Course Notes 2015) Fumes would be a major hazard, the risks associated with this are life threatening. They would be physical and chemical hazards. The risks of fumes can come from gas leaks, chemical fumes etc. Some of the risks associated with fumes are they can cause serious illness, death, over exposure can lead to long term health problems, gas leaks can cause explosions. The control measures for this hazard would be storing chemicals away in proper storage areas, a carbon dioxide alarm and when handling dangerous substances always wear your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Making sure all chemicals are Classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available and up to date. (www.google.com/image) In healthcare hazards are all too common but they must be identified and control measures must be put in place. Employers need to refer to the hierarchy of control measures which are: Remove, Replace, Reduce, Restriction, training and PPE to ensure safety. 3 HAZARDS COMMON IN THE WORKPLACE 4. EXPLAIN THE TYPICAL CONTENTS OF A FIRST-AID KIT THEIR APPROPRIATE USES. First aid is the first or immediate help given to a patient before the arrival of a paramedic or doctor. The first aid kit is there to offer an appropriate point of care, everything in the first-aid kit is put together based on the knowledge and experience on those putting it together. Included in it is PPE which is one of the employer’s duties in the workplace to have to maintain health and safety at work. (www.hsa.ie) 5. EXPLAIN THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FOLLOWING HAZARDS WORK ENVIRONMENT, WORK PRACTICES, MEDICATION, ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND OUTLINE FOR EACH, STEPS WHICH THE EMPLOYER MIGHT TAKE TO CONTROL THESE RISKS In the workplace there are many risks, some include hazards work environment, work practices, medication, alcohol and drugs. Under the SHWWA 2005 one of the employer’s duties to employees is to provide a safe place to work so therefore the employer may have steps in place to control these risks. Every year it costs the state 3.6billion in accidents, 70% of accidents can be prevented by good health safety morals. (Course Notes 2015) There would usually be a risk assessment carried out which would: Identify the hazard b) assess the risk c) put controlled measures in place www.google.com/image 6. OUTLINE RISK FACTORS IN RELATION TO HEALTH, TO INCLUDE STRESS/LIFESTYLE/DIET/ILLNESS The risk factors in relation to health in the workplace are huge because stress, lifestyle, diet and illness all fall under health. In healthcare it is important that the staff promote good health and wellbeing, they do this through putting into practice of workplace policies and health promotion activities. For employers the risk factors can lead to loss of business and damage the company name, performance impairment, absenteeism and the loss of competitive edge. STRESS is a major risk to the health of an employee. Stress can be caused by many different reasons and have many different effects. Some effects of stress: Can be physical or mental Interfere with your ability to perform Increase cholesterol blood pressure Cause depression, break downs etc. All these can have a bad effect on the employees work and performance. www.google.com/image LIFESTYLE can have risk factors in relation to an employee’s health. A hectic or busy lifestyle can take its toll on someone’s health. If a person had a busy social lifestyle and were out parting every night it would eventually have an effect on their work due to tiredness or maybe coming into work with alcohol still in their system, the same would go for drugs. Drugs can be part of someone’s lifestyle too and have a devastating impact on it. ILLNESS can also have a lot of risk factors in relation to health. In the workplace it can lead to cross contamination staff and patients. It can lead to poor work performance, judgement and unpredictable moods. Lack of good time keeping and an increase of absenteeism. DIET can play a major role in the growth, repair and maintenance of a body. A well balanced diet and exercise are essential to good health. A bad diet, lack of water and no exercise can result in tiredness, stress, illnesses and depression which in return can influence someone’s ability to work. www.google.com/image REFERENCES (Course Notes 2015)page 2 (www.google.com/image)page 2 (www.hsa.ie) page 3 (Course Notes 2015)page 4 (www.google.com/image)page 4 (www.hsa.ie)page 6 (Course Notes 2015)page 7 (www.google.com/image)page 8 (www.google.com/image)page 9 (www.google.com/image) page 10 1

Let's Rank the Clique! In case you don't know, the Clique was an infamous backstage of friends (Triple H, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and X-Pac/Sean Waltman) who reportedly managed to find ways to manipulate Vince McMahon and the WWF's booking to their own advantage for a few years during the mid-90's. acts of non-conformity: admonished or admired? Essay -- essays researc

Acts of non-conformity should either be admonished or admired, I feel, depending on circumstance and the effect that act has on people. Each and every act is unique and different and may either have a negative or positive effect on people. It is the result of the act of non-conformity where we can truly decide whether it should be admired or admonished. Acts of non-conformity which have a positive effect on people, or show that a person is comfortable being an individual, should be admired as they take great courage to perform them. If an act of non-conformity also displays a person’s individuality and self pride I feel this should be greatly admired because it is often hard for many people in today’s society to be different and individual, because great emphasis is placed on conformity i...

Homelessness as a social problem Essay

Homelessness is a social problem and is the condition of people who lack regular housing. Homeless people are often considered to have little necessities such as food, shelter, money or medical help. They would usually spend their night uncomfortably on the streets or temporarily in a hostel. Some people may reside in their friends house on a sofa or on their floor with a blanket. Some of the factors why people become homeless are due to domestic violence, relationship breakdown, fleeing persecution from another country, drugs and alcohol misuse, family disputes and mental health problems. Another common reason why people are homeless is that they cannot keep a steady job, therefore they cannot pay for their rent or they cannot pay their bills so resort to being homeless. Some people receive little income from their jobs which is not enough for them to pay all the bills or buy enough food or get themselves any clothes. Homeless people would turn to begging on the streets to provide so me money for themselves and purchase the little food they can get with the money. Birmingham last year is said to have had the highest number of people homeless in the country with figures reaching to 925 households.Homelessness can be caused by physical or sexual abuse from their families and so they may choose to run away and seek refuge on the streets. For homeless people, there are the good days and the bad days. The good days include the homeless getting reasonable amount of money in which they may receive 10 pounds by panhandling an hour. The bad days involve inflation or recession in which case they would receive very little and undergo starvation for the night. Some Homeless people may find other ways overcoming the problem of homelessness; one of which is going to prison. This way they will receive accommodation and enough food for them to eat which prevents them from starving.

The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis

The discolor W either report analysis As I started reading this fiddling story, it clearly introduced who the characters are and where it took place. The fibber is a charr she has no name, remains anon. through start the story. She lives with her husband canful in a house. This house is isolated from society, since the utterly story indicates that it is distant from village, roads or any means of communication. It in addition contains locks and supply throughout. The woman is ill and this nausea has move her in a weak redact with her husband and everything around her.We know that she wants to write, precisely her husband doesnt let her, so she does it in mystical. Although this type of writing is primarily to show mild personality complaint in dealing with life, at the uniform quantify I believe it shows how to each one person beares their illness and how it builds up with original outcome. Here the author shows how the woman expresses her illness through th e circumstances of the jaundiced wallpaper such as dreaming and fantasying through the paper, which light-emitting diode to her break shore. At offshoot, the narrator describes the discolor wallpaper as ?It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, enounce enough to constantly irritate and draw out study, and when you follow the lame un authoritative curves for a little distance they suddenly pass suicideplunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions.? It shows how the narrator dis uniforms the yellow wallpaper and she elaborates her feelings towards it. This retell explains a lot roughly how she feels, and also points out how suppressed and weak she is. When it express ? follow the lame un reliable curves? t refers to the husband that whitethorn lead the narrator to commit suicide because of the mood she listens and obeys him. Although he seems to say the things that would make her better and determine her that she is getting bet ter, he is non authentically letting her do what would make her better, which is what she wants. As a physician who recognizes and treats his wifes condition, it would appear to be that he understands her best, still he does non seem to stool how severe her plead is. Neither does he have an adequate way of treating it, same not letting her do what she wants like for instance writing.I believe he underestimates the state of her brainiac, and he has a lot to do with the outcome of her condition. This leads to her obsession with the wallpaper. At first the narrator hated it, and then she got utilise to it. She started letting her imagination wander close to this wallpaper, she saw in her minds eye people, scenes ? at that place is a beautiful shaded lane that runs down there from the house. I eer reckon I see people move in these numerous paths and arbors, but John has cautioned me not to give way to visit at least.?By focusing on these fantasies or dreams, I believe it expresses her feelings and makes her lots confident. Despite what John takes about her fantasies, she continues to cerebrate things. He thinks she is getting better in spite of her speculations, she knows she is getting better because of these speculations, her illness has its own certain effect and it redden develops. John warns her several judgment of convictions that she must(prenominal) use her self-control to rein in her imagination, which he maintenances will run forth with her. Of course, the narrators eventual aberration is a product of therepressionof her imaginative power, not the expression of it.She is constantly longing for an aroused means, even going so far as to keep a secret journal, which she describes to a greater extent than once as a relief to her mind. This illness progresses in a way that lets her see a woman in the wallpaper. She sees the same woman in different places and she thinks that the woman still gets out in daytime. She says, ? It is the s ame woman, I know, for she is always creeping along, and most women do not creep by daylight.? Lori Voth explains this part in a way that I whole agree with. She says that the woman who for some time is hidden in the background of the paper symbolic representationizes the main characters fear of presenting herself and her opinion. I agree that it is a symbol of fear because the narrator is a face of the hidden woman behind the wallpaper, which relates much to her. She is hiding in this house outdoor(a) from society, s pityd to say what she feels or what she wants. In my opinion, I think that this is one of the things that led to her depression, if the narrator was able to express herself from the low and not let her husband or anyone control her, as a bequeath she may be in a better condition.Reaching the end, she doesnt really care much about what anyone thinks. She starts showing certain actions that may confirm that she going insane, like peeling off all the paper, lockup th e door and throwing the key in the effort path. On one hand it seems that she is departed insane, on the other hand, I think she is getting out of her cage, expressing what has been there all along may be in a certain way that only satisfies her.In my own view as I discussed it before, each individual has a certain way of expressing their illness or more likely their feelings, and it comes with different ways of deportment (outcome) depending on the person. This story takes the readers mind to different view of women. Women are usually known for being the quiet, sophisticated, and sound characters in society. This time the reader may be taken into the inner-most realms of womens mind and experiences. The experience of the narrator in the ? The color Wallpaper? hows that she is gone mad because her percentage in society is limited and her power to express herself creatively is constricted. This inability for her to express herself in a meaningful way eventually leads her to ass ociate herself with the woman in the wallpaper who looks to be, like the narrator, behind debar or in a cage. some(prenominal) important feminine critics have seen the The Yellow Wallpaper not only an absolute representation of a situation of woman in a harsh refinement but also a nonplus for their own reading and writing practices (Davison 120).The yellow wallpaper represents several ideas and conditions and every time I read it a unused view captures my eyes.
